Troubleshooting:

Which broadband speed should I subscribe to?

If you use your broadband connection mainly for emailing, 8 Mbps should suffice. If you have several household members using the Internet at the same time, or you stream High-Definition video, play online games, send or upload large files regularly, then we suggest that you subscribe to a higher speed package.

Can I set up a wireless (WiFi) connection at home?

Yes, you can set up your own wireless connection at home by installing a Wifi router, which can be bought from most computer or telephony shops. Ensure that your router is configured correctly, is not limited to a speed below the one you have subscribed to and is protected with a password. Typically, the further you are from the Wifi router, the slower the internet connection that you will experience. du does not provide any technical assistance to support the installation or configuration of a WiFi router.

Can I use the connections I have in my house for both TV and broadband?

Yes in most of the residential areas where du provides service, you can use the same socket for either broadband or TV interchangeably. In some areas however, this is not possible and the socket can only be used for the service requested at the time of activation. Please note that when several sockets are activated, you may notice a slower speed during simultaneous broadband use.

How can I protect myself from viruses?

Use anti-virus software: Make sure you install appropriate software to protect your PC and ensure it is always up to date.

Be wary of e-mail attachments: Many viruses, worms, hoaxes, trojans and other forms of malicious software still spread themselves via e-mail, usually as attachments. Unless you trust the sender and you are absolutely sure what is in the attachment, don’t open it.

Do you allow VoIP services such Skype?

PC to telephone VoIP services are not supported, however VoIP PC-to-PC, such as Skype PC-to-PC or Google Talk, are available.

Does du have a “Fair Usage Policy”, and what is it?

To ensure that each customer gets a fair share of internet bandwidth, du follows international best practice, prioritising time-sensitive traffic and operating a “Fair Usage Policy”. This means two things:

  • Very heavy users (e.g. downloading more than 300 Gigabyte per month) may receive a reduced speed during peak hours (6 pm midnight on weekdays) to ensure that the service received by other customers is not impacted through extremely heavy usage by a minority of people.
  • Non-time sensitive internet services such as peer-to-peer file sharing (e.g. torrents) receive a lower speed during peak hours to ensure that customers using time-sensitive services such as video-streaming or gaming are not impacted.

This only applies to broadband, not to du TV or telephony.

I subscribed to a higher-speed package but at times my connection still appears to be slow?

Verify that no other application, such as peer-to-peer, is slowing down your experience. If you use a (Wifi) router, check that it is configured correctly and to the correct speed and that your PC or connected device is close to the router. Finally, check your broadband speed with the independent Speed Test at www.du.ae. Connect your computer directly to the wall socket with a cable, not via a WiFi router and go to ‘at home’ > ‘customer care’ > ‘test your broadband speed’.

As is the practice with most ISPs around the world, with du’s broadband service, your subscribed speed is an ‘up to’ speed meaning that at peak times it may be lower. The service is also asymmetric meaning that the upload and download speeds are different. The download speed is the higher of the two and represents the speed at which you can receive data from the internet while the upload speed is the speed at which you can send data to the internet. The download speed is the one mentioned in your subscription and is the one which most closely determines your internet experience.
